This spring, Coach Trent Mongero will begin his 23rd season as a head high school baseball coach. This past summer he ended his 11-year stint as the skipper of North Hall High School, in Gainesville, Georgia, by accepting the same position 5 hours south here at Glynn Academy in Brunswick, Georgia.
However, this past 2017 season, while at North Hall, his Trojans won their school’s first ever state championship in baseball in its 60-year history. Final national polls had the North Hall Trojans ranked as high as #15.
When coach Mongero moved from North Carolina to Georgia in 2006 he inherited a North Hall program that had never been past the second round of the state playoffs. During his 11-year tenure at North Hall his teams equaled or bettered that accomplishment in 6 seasons, culminating in two state championship appearances in the past five seasons and one coveted state championship title. As a result, Trent has been named “Region coach of the year” 3 times, “Georgia Coach of the year” 2 times, and “ABCA National coach of the year” in 2017.
Early in the 2017 season Trent reached the milestone of 400 victories as a head coach. Also, Trent has coached over 100 students/athletes who have furthered their playing careers at the collegiate level and 14 at the professional level. Coach Mongero has never coached at a high school that had access to athletes outside of his school district.
Off the field Trent Mongero authored the “Winning Baseball” Books and Video series which received the endorsement of legendary ABCA member and 2010, 2011 NCAA National Champion, and NCAA Coach of the Year, Ray Tanner of the University of South Carolina.
Coach Mongero began his college baseball career at South Florida State College (NJCAA). He was co-team captain, and his team played in the Florida Junior College Championship Finals in 1987. After Junior College, Mongero played at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. His 1989 UNCW Seahawks won the Colonial Athletic Association Regular Season Championship. Trent led the CAA in stolen bases and was ranked by the NCAA as the 6th “toughest out” in all of college baseball. In 1989 Trent was voted CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) Conference “Player of the Year.” He is a current member of the UNC-W All-Decade Team 1985 – 1995. Upon college graduation, Trent played in the Atlanta Braves farm system.
Trent and Sonya Mongero have been married 22 years. They have two children, Taber, who was named Georgia’s “Co-Player of the year” in 2017 and is a currently a freshmen baseball player at Gardner-Webb University under coach Rusty Stroupe. Their daughter Maris is also a college freshman who attends the University of North Georgia. She was chosen as one of the “top 10 Most Outstanding Seniors” in her graduating class.
