Larry Eugene Young (born February 6, 1954) is a former umpire in Major League Baseball. After beginning his career in the American League in 1983, he worked throughout both leagues from 2000 until his retirement following the 2007 season. He wore uniform number 28.

Young umpired in the World Series in 1996 and 2003, and also in the American League Championship Series in 1992, 1998 and 2002. He officiated in two All-Star Games (1991, 2003), and in six Division Series (1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004); he was crew chief for the 2004 ALDS between the Anaheim Angels and Boston Red Sox.

As of 2018, Young is a supervisor of MLB umpires.

Notable games

On April 16, 2001, Young was struck in the forehead by a thrown ball during an Arizona Diamondbacks–St. Louis Cardinals game. Young was taken to a hospital by ambulance and required fourteen stitches.[2] He returned to umpiring on May 1.[3]

Personal life

Young is a graduate of Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois. He is a member of the school's Alumni Hall of Fame.[4]

During an umpires' lockout in 1995, Young refereed a World Wrestling Federation (WWF) match between The Undertaker and King Kong Bundy at WrestleMania XI.

Things Discussed:
Coach and Players need to know the rules and understand the relationship they should have with all umpires. Things discussed: Training coaches in the rules by attending umpire sessions. As a coach you should umpire that way you get their perspective. What umpires are doing during the shut down. Umpires have to have thick skin, how do you train for that. Suggestions in knowing and studying the rules. Rules have the interpretation manual. Toughest calls for an umpire. Manager questioning calls all the time, how to handle it. Has the strike zone changed over the years and how. Balks are tough to call, yes or no, and how umpires watch for balks. Left handed pitcher 45 degree rule, there is no rule, explain. Video replays, good and bad, changes in the future, what you like to see changed. Tie goes to the runner, yes or no. How you evaluate MLB umpires during games. What it takes for international umpires to get better and get into professional baseball. The strike zone is different around the world, what has happened to make it all the same. Ball hits home plate, any of it, goes fair, etc, what is the general rule. Catchers' positions matter, which is the best one to help the umpire. Catching coaches study umpire zones. When runner stealing and catcher comes up too early, what do you call and do you say anything to the catcher. If you were totally in charge what rules would you change that are old and do not make sense or apply anymore. Obstruction and Interference, explain both. Should we have an umpire in the broadcaster booth so they can explain the rules properly instead of having the broadcaster say something wrong. There is so much more to this episode.
