On this episode of Baseball Outside the Box, Coach Caliendo worked with Dodgers Assistant Catching Coordinator Ryan Sienko at Curacao Baseball Week and watched him in action. They discussed many outside the box topics when it comes to the teaching and the drills to implement. Ryan has studied this position via trial and error along with using scientific research to help back it up. He certainly is one who does not always follow the status quo and the perfect guest for our show. They discuss all kinds of topics like Catching Mechanics of Receiving, Blocking, and Throwing. Conditioning specific to the catching position. Strategy and Pitcher Catcher Relationship. You will learn so much about how to actually throw and not how we taught it in the past by bringing the glove and hand to the ear. Throwing from certain positions can be helpful. Blocking starts with taking the glove to the ball, not placing the glove between your legs. Blocking starts with the left knee if you are blocking right, influencing umpires how you receive the ball, not arguing with umpires. How to identify hitters weaknesses. Attacking the hitters weakness and making an adjustment from there. With a runner on base you should have a comfortable stance, does not have to be with his butt up and level to knees, why? Is there a better way?
