Things discussed:
Show dedicated to Bill Harrison of Slow the Game Down, the GodFather of Sports Vision and Ryan’s dad. Their company has been training athletes of all sports, all levels for over 49 years. Going to an eye doctor is important but then you need to go to a sports vision person to do an evaluation of eye skills to make sure you are able to pick up the ball, track it and so on. John Schuerholz, President Atlanta Braves’ These guys are the best in baseball at the single most important part of the game. Eyes see first, give information to the brain and the brain allows the body to move. Cant see it then now sure how you are able to accomplish a skill at the best of your abilities. Sports Vision training is very important but can be affected by other things you are not doing well, like bad nutrition, lack of sleep, weak muscles and on. Ask players what they saw, why? Ask players what they are looking at? Do all players use the same techniques to see the ball better? Pick it up better? The skill is individualized. Find out what they do not see. Find out what they are doing wrong. Help you build Eye-Mind-Body reactions. Training at game speed. What moves to track the ball, head of eyes? Same for all? Pitchers have different ways to pick up the target. Visualizing where you are throwing the sport helps visual ability. Drills, ask players on the bench to see who can pick up the type of pitch faster, Ryan gives more drills, this also keeps players attention on the bench, keeps them in the game. Properly prepare visually on deck, its not just about watching the pitcher and ball. As a coach ask questions about what they are seeing or not seeing, then determine a visual plan. Things we teach about vision training which does not help picking up and tracking baseballs at high speeds or curveballs. Proper vision tracking/training allows the body to stay balanced and accomplish the task better. Proper visual plan, training allows the body to adjust to its movements better. All positions need to train for visual ability. There is way more to this episode, I may have to listen to it a few times.
