For the first time ever in the history of Cuban Baseball prior to or after the revolutionary has an American coach traveled the country giving courses to Cuban baseball coaches. At the same time, he interviews Cuban Director of Coaches Education with the Cuban Baseball Federation, Jesus Barroso. You have got to listen to this interview and learn so much about Cuban baseball and why it is so good.
In state radio in Cuba there was a lot of discussion about this historical time.
Former USA Baseball National team coach Peter Caliendo traveled to Cuba in co-operation with the International Sports group and the Cuban Baseball Federation.
Coach Caliendo traveled through Cuba for 9 days with a great staff lead by the head of the Cuban coaches program Jesus Barroso and 7-time Cuban batting champion now coach Wilfredo Shancez. Their travels started in Havana continued cross country to Mayawayga, then 14 hours to Granma and 6 hours to Villa Clara, finally a 4-hour ride back to Havana. 24 hours of driving throughout the beautiful country to the 3 locations.
Each location hosted a two-day theory and practical course for coaches all over the province. In total Cuba has 16 provinces and each one sent at least 5 to 6 coaches.
” Cuban Baseball has been at the top of international baseball for many years. After coming here my 9th time, 1st time teaching the course around the country I know why they have been one of the best baseball countries in the world. They have a tremendous organization at the top, the Cuban Baseball Federation controls all the baseball in Cuba. A fantastic coaches development program which has seen as many as 322 organized coaches courses in 20 years, high-level well-educated coaches, 16 baseball academies which house the best players ages 18 u, 16 u, 14 u and 12u,
60 thousand baseball players and many are very athletic,
passion for the game, hungry to succeed to the next level and great pride in their country.
We look forward to many years working together with the Cuban Baseball Federation to continue helping coaches get better in Cuba. They are hungry for the technology and science part of the game. My trip allowed me to meet so many friendly Cuban people and see their beautiful country. Hopefully one day we can all be working together to better our countries” Peter Caliendo
