Tony La Russa leads off the Managers series talking to host Peter Caliendo of Baseball Outside the Box on managing the game of baseball, managing players and a lot more. La Russa gets into the concept of “personalizing”, one then greatest successes of Tony’s managing. Many coaches struggle to get their kids to play hard from start to finish, especially when behind in the score. Tony mentions that the first and most critical thing was the intensity he brought to the competition? Playing hard for 9 innings every game. How can you as a Manager create the environment where your team plays consistently with that level of intensity and urgency on a daily basis? Tony talks about how scoring first was very important for him, and he explains why and what you can do to try to accomplish it. Tony talks about what he tried to do with his teams, and how he got them to do it, was it practiced in spring training? He mentions Dick Williams advice about the practice of filling out your lineup cards with game notes? Coaches have this idea that they should have other coaches come out and evaluate their practice and games, a great learning experience. Tony talks about he was hard on himself and mentions how he would have a year-end review of what he did that season. Tony also explains his theory behind having the pitcher bat 8th or 9th. He also gives a lot of credit to pitching coach Dave Duncan, and spoke about his book and its secret formula to winning games? Tony talks about how the game at the youth level has dramatically changed and gives advice to coaches getting into coaching today.
