Zepp is a somewhat new product to the baseball world. It is a sensor that is placed at the bottom of bat and analyzes each swing within a second, then gives 3D feed back.
Zepp will analyze the swing of any batter against the company’s database, and, if certain parts of the swing are not in the top 75%, the sensors will turn red. The user can then click on the red parts of the swing to get a drill from Chicago Cubs coach John Mallee or Florida’s softball coach Tim Walton.
Another feature in this product allows a coach to sync up a sensor with another. As Stocking put it, “So, Peter, if you were in Japan and I needed to analyze your swing, I could see every single swing along with every part of the swing from my house.”
Mike Trout, Angels outfielder and well-known spokesman for Zepp, has introduced a whole new product. The Smart Bat was introduced in this past year’s spring training, and, to much surprise, a bat speed contest was made between eight Angels players.
The Smart Bat will be released this summer. Stocking commented on it and compared it to the Zepp. “The Zepp is great for practice and analyzing the swing, but because the sensor in the Smart Bat is inside the bat, it will be able to be used in the game. We will be able to see everything from swing path to attack angle.”
Stocking goes on to discuss how he met John Mallee and the beginning of the Zepp. “I was fortunate enough to be with John Mallee and we traveled all over the country giving camps, and we decided to use this new golf technology to try to analyze the players’ swings.”
He then goes on to explain how the Zepp was developed for baseball. “I ended up contacting Zepp and they said, it doesn’t work that way but we do have something that’s going to come out pretty soon for baseball, and I got it to test it out and I ended up jumping on a plane, to give some feedback, and 24 hours after that I was hired.”
